The President of BUSINESSMED, Mr Galal El Zorba, opened the meeting with a speech in which he highlighted the common visions between the North and the South as well as the interest of discussing the means liable to enhance progress and concentrate on the opportunities promoting the development of the Mediterranean region.  

Mr Mahdi Al-Masri has been appointed as new President of PFI (Palestinian Federation of Industries) succeeding to Mr Bassim Khoury who has become the new Minister of National Economy and resigned as PFI President.

The elective assembly of the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco (CGEM) took place on May 21st 2009. Mr Mohamed Horani has been elected President of the Moroccan Federation for a three-year mandate, succeeding to Mr Moulay Hafidh El Alamy, who was leading the Moroccan Organisation since june 2006.

The European Investment Bank's financial arm for the Mediterranean (FEMIP), and the Principality of Monaco organized a Conference on "The challenges of sustainable water financing and climate change in the Mediterranean" which took place in Monaco on May 10th and 11th 2009.
Inaugurated by HSH Prince Albert II and hosted by EIB Vice-President Philippe de Fontaine Vive, this conference gathered policymakers from the two sides of the Mediterranean, water specialists and representatives from financial institutions and international organizations.

Galal El Zorba, President of BUSINESSMED, chaired the second MedAlliance Board, which was held in Barcelona on April 24th 2009. 

MedAlliance Board, that now BUSINESSMED chairs, is the Steering Committee of the Invest in Med programme (ANIMA, BUSINESSMED, ASCAME, EUROCHAMBRES and the special partners GTZ, UNIDO and EUROMEDITERRANEE), which is co-financed by the European Commission.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and the observatory of sustainable development organized on April 6th and 7th in Nice, in collaboration with UpM (Union for the Mediterranean) and the city of Nice, a conference « Responding to the challenges of sustainable development in the Mediterranean ».

The conference gathered representatives of the local authorities, researchers, experts and representatives of the civil society from various countries.

Mr Galal El Zorba, President of the FEI and new President of BUSINESSMD visited the Head Office of the Organisation in Tunis on March 26th and 27th 2009. The president was accompanied by his Advisors, Mr Hani Hafez, Mr Adham Nadim, and Mr Alaa Ezz.

Following BUSINESSMED annual Ordinary General Assembly, Mrs Shéhérazade Berrehouma has been appointed Secretary General of the Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprises – BUSINESSMED. Mrs Berrehouma took up her position on March 10th, 2009.

The Union of Mediterranean Confederations of Enterprises - BUSINESSMED held its annual Ordinary General Assembly in Beirut – Intercontinental Phoenicia Hotel on February 21st 2009.

Mr Galal El ZORBA – President of the Federation of Egyptian Industries (FEI- Egypt) and 1st Vice-President of BUSINESSMED took over Mr Jacques Jean Sarraf at the head of the Union as President for a two-year mandate. Mr Hédi DJILANI, President of the UTICA (Tunisia) was appointed as Vice-President of BUSINESSMED for a two-year mandate as well.
